Every year, come September, another selection of young fresh faces joins the ranks of the dental profession. As those of us who’ve been members for several years (or decades) it’s apparent that it is a career that is certainly becoming more difficult to navigate. But with a little help it still remains rewarding and worthwhile. Our Inspire series is aimed at both young dentists but also anyone who thinks they can benefit from some words of wisdom from someone who has specialised in a certain area.

Dr Florence King

Dr Flo was born and grew up in Sussex before moving to Cardiff for University where she graduated in 2020.

She has a patient centred approach to treatment and puts great emphasis on getting to know her patients. She has been working as a general dental practitioner in Cardiff for the past 3 years.

Her most recent accomplishment was being awarded The Welsh Sustainable Hero Special Award. This award recognises an extraordinary person within a practice who has really become a sustainability hero. They have helped others in their team realise the importance of taking action on climate change, inspired people to get involved through their enthusiasm, and are very good at practising sustainability within their role or personal life.

Flo led her practice through the Greener Primary Care Framework and was able to achieve Gold Award for them as well as earning them Highly Commended in the Sustainable Business Award category at the Dentistry 2023 Awards Final. She completed the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare training course in Sustainable Dentistry this year and has been putting it to good use by helping educate other practices in Cardiff by speaking at various CPD study evenings and for HEIW. She is an active member of Green Health Wales and sits on the national steering group to inform on dental sustainable healthcare. She is currently helping to launch the HEIW Climate Smart Portal on the Gwella leadership website where she will be the dental lead.

A Greener Future for Dentistry

During the evening, Dr Flo will be covering how prevention can be the most sustainable option in dentistry and how as clinicians we need to be factoring sustainability to our treatment plans. She will also be covering some changes that can be made in practice now that will likely be becoming legislation in the next few years. As the global climate crisis unfolds and we further see the effect on the environment and health, now is the perfect time to implement changes and get ahead of the curve.

The evening is being held at the Swansea Bay Golf Club and will be accompanied by some light refreshments for those coming straight from work. We are a not-for-profit organisation so only ask for a small contribution towards the expenses of the evening of £10 if you are not a fully paid up member. It’ll be the best £10 you’ve spent in a while and you’ll be awarded 2hrs of verifiable CPD.

We can’t wait to see you all on the evening. It promises to be an unmissable event. We couldn’t put on the event without the help of our sponsors and contributors to the evening, so to all of them and the members of the IDAW who have generously donated their time to organising this event, a massive THANK YOU!
